Why Mugwort Should be a Part of Your Menstrual Cycle

Why Mugwort Should be a Part of Your Menstrual Cycle

Mugwort is one of my favorite medicinal plants and also one of the most overlooked. It is incredibly easy to find in most health foods stores and it grows wild in many parts of the world. It is used to help with a wide array of ailments, most spiritual practices, and dream work.

You can drink it, smoke it, wear it, and apply it! I’ve found, however, that my favorite way to incorporate mugwort into my life is when I’m on my period and the cramps become unbearable. Mugwort is a Godsend for women who have irregular cycles, intense cramps, and crazy mood swings.

If you aren’t already incorporating mugwort into your life, the following reasons will send you running to your local herbalist.

 1. MENSTRUAL CYCLE REGULATION

Speaking from experience, I know how stressful missing a period can be.

Is there something wrong? Am I pregnant? Am I too stressed?

Then, stressing about not having a period causes you to miss your next one. Now you’re stuck in a vicious cycle and you feel like you’re out of options.

YOU ARE NOT!

Mugwort is an emmenagogue, meaning it encourages menstrual flow, which is what makes it so great at starting up a weak flow.

To reap these benefits you can drink mugwort tea before bed on the days leading to your period. This may also make your dreams more vivid so pay attention to what messages may be coming through for you!

2. CRAMP RELIEVER

Mugwort stimulates blood flow to your uterus which, in turn, helps your uterus shed its lining. Without a healthy blood flow, your uterus will strain and seize to dispel old blood. The straining is the culprit behind the painful cramps we know and hate.

More blood flow = less pain

3. MORE ENERGY

When it’s my time of the month, I’m always BEAT. The most simple task feels like a mission when I get home from a long day. Mugwort is commonly regarded as an “energy tonic” due to its ability to energize you while relaxing your nerves. The perfect herb to give you an evening boost while helping you wrap up your day.

4. LESS BLOATING

Digestive issues are no stranger to this healing herb. Mugwort helps your body create the secretions it needs to efficiently break down your food. When we eat foods that are too complex for our digestive system, they sit, fester, and give you uncomfortable gas. This causes your bloated belly. With a smoother digestive process, your body will be able to break down food and relieve gas before it gets in the way of your day.

5. BALANCE YOUR MOOD SWINGS

Mugwort is a great balancer, especially when it comes to hormones. Balanced hormones make for an improved mental state and allow you to be more in control of your emotions during your period- which we all know can be a challenge.

No more crying because you dropped your pencil two consecutive times!

❗ Before you take mugwort ❗ :

  • Don’t overdo it! Mugwort is known to give you extremely vivid dreams. While this may be fun, it can be quite nerve wracking for others.

  • If you are pregnant, do not take mugwort! Since mugwort acts as an emmenagogue, too much can cause a miscarriage or other complications.

  • ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS.

I hope you enjoy mugwort as much as I do!
